Stanice Anderson Named 2012 National Honorary Chairperson for SAMHSA’s National Wellness Week

National Recovery Month - September

It’s official! I’ve been commissioned to be the National Honorary Chairperson for SAMHSA 2012 National #Wellness Week 9/17-23. With this honor, the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), commissioned me to write a poem for the nation incorporating this year’s focus and call to action.  National Wellness week is in tandem with SAMHSA’s National Recovery Month.

Here’s is a startling fact that the Wellness Week campaign hopes to create a momentum to change:

People with mental and substance use disorders die decades earlier than the general population, mostly due to preventable medical conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular, respiratory, or infectious diseases (including HIV). – SAMHSA

National Wellness Week’s theme is Living Wellness, to emphasize that no matter which dimension of wellness we focus on, our ultimate goal is to live well—within our bodies, minds, and communities. The theme also shows that Wellness is not static or finite; rather, it’s a continuous journey.

This year’s National Wellness Week focuses on“Intellectual —Recognizing creative abilities and finding ways to expand knowledge and skills,” which is one of eight Eight Dimensions of Wellness. My role is to help SAMHSA spread this message, inspire, and motivate organizations and individuals across the country to incorporate Creative Expression and The Arts into their quests to live healthier and longer lives.
